What About ATL-962?

What is ATL-962?

ATL-962 is an inhibitor of gastrointestinal lipases designed to cause weight loss by reducing the digestion and thus the absorption of fat from the diet.

Developed by the small British biotech company Alizyme plc, ATL-962 has a similar action to Roche's Xenical and preliminary data suggests that ATL-962 is about as effective as Xenical..

But ATL-962 has generated an interim phase IIb safety profile suggesting potential to minimize the incidence of adverse lower gastrointestinal effects -- oily spotting, fecal incontinence and flatus with discharge -- compared to Xenical.

Alizyme in January entered into a licensing agreement with Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd. of Japan, and the two companies announced that they intended to advance ATL-962 to phase III trials based on the phase IIb trial data.

But phase III trials have yet to begin, and ATL-962 is not expected to be on the market-in Europe before 2007, and in the US and Japan before 2009.
